The ways anting helps birds.
The text and the lecture offer two opposing views about the ways anting benefits birds. While the reading passage lists theories on how anting helps birds, the professor repudiates each of the theories as unconvincing, and states that the genuine purpose of birds is not clear yet.
First, the article posits that birds use anting as a way to pacify their skin's irritation while feather change. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this theory by explaining that the only reason corroborating this thesis is the timing of the anting. In fact, while birds change their feathers during summers, the anting also occurs during the same period of time. According to the professor, it is more a coincidence than a signal of a cause-and-effect relationship. She makes it clear that it may be that anting occurs during summers because ants are more abundant, thereby making it easy for birds to find them. Hence, relieving of skin irritation during summer cannot be a persuasive explanation.
Next, the author claims that birds use the formic acid released by ants as a shield against parasites. In contrast, the professor rejects this idea, and states that if this theory were true, the numbers of birds which become afflicted to parasites such as mites and ticks would become fewer among those birds which are used to anting, while recent researches manifest that this is not the case. Thus, anting has not any significant impact on parasite protection.
Finally, the passage declares that anting aids birds to prepare ants to be eaten. On the other hand, the lecturer counters this assertion, and explains that birds are accustomed to rub various things to their feathers and body, for instance they do so with regard to ciggaret's remains and soap also. For this reason, the act of rubbing some thing to the body is not restricted to the food, and thus cannot be attributed to eating.
