integrated writing task
The reading is about a proposal for employees to work for four days a week with a pay of four-fifth of their normal salary and discusses its benefits on the country’s economy, the individual company and the employee who accepts this option. However, the lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article. He explains that this above mentioned proposal would not improve company’s profit, economic condition and life of the employee as suggested by the article.
First, the article avers that shorter workweek would make the workers more rested and alert and thus would enhance company’s profit. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He points out that this new idea would in fact force the company to spend more. Addition of the new workforce would result in spending more money in their training and providing medical benefits which will be same for the four days and a five days working employee. Moreover, more employees means requirement of more office space which will cut into company’s profit.
Second, the author claims that hiring more staff will ensure same amount of work as it will be shared among the employees and would not result in more payroll cost. The professor rebut this argument by saying that hiring will prove to be more costly as explained above. Therefore, the company will find another option by asking them to work overtime to makeup for the differences. Consequently, it would increase the employer’s expectation that a four-day employee can work for and finish the 5 days task in four days. This would make their current job unpleasant.
Finally, the article mentions that the idea of shorter working weeks would reduce the unemployment rate and improve the employee’s quality of life. The professor disagrees with this. He explains that although, it would increase the free time for the workers but, on the other hand, it will risk their quality of life. This new proposal can reduce their job stability and harm their chances of advancement in their career. Four day employees would lose their jobs in economic downturn. Moreover, they would be passed over promotion as the company prefers a five-day employee in management position to ensure consistent coverage and supervision for the entire week.
