In the passage, the author views that the humpback whales may be navigating by the stars. However, in the lecture, the professor refutes this point from all three aspects.
To begin with, the author illustrate that the whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars to determine the place, which totally contradicts what the lecture indicates. In the lecture, the professor holds the view that there are no connections between intelligence and using stars. For example, the duck can also use star, but the intelligence of the duck is average. So, he states that the ability of using stars is just born with.
The second point the professor doubts on the passage is that the author indicates that the whales migrate in straight lines. Nevertheless, in the lecture, the professor argues that this is just because they sense the external force-magnetic force. Due to the magnetic force, the whales can be sensitive to the direction.
Finally, another point the professor provides to refute the passage is the exhibition of an unusual behavior. In the passage, the author states that the whales sometimes observe floating straight up for minutes at a time. However, in the lecture, the professor disagree with that and provide the example of shark to refute it. He states that the shark sometimes also floats straight up, but the shark never migrates.
To sum up, the passage is full of holes and the point mentioned in it should be considered more deeply.
