Both the reading and the lecturer talk about the validity of evidences stated by Chevalier de Seingalt about European society in 18th century. Although the reading material supports three main hypotheses for the fact that Chevalier' memoir was not as valid as he has stated, the lecturer finds all reasons dubious and provides three counter evidences to refute them all.
Considering the first theory, the reading holds the view that Chevalier wasn't rich enough and he borrowed money from merchants of Switzerland. However, the lecturer refers this fact that he wasn't as poor as the author thinks since he possessed huge amount of properties and wealth and it could have taken a few days to change his properties into cash, so while he was waiting for money of his sold properties, he must have borrowed some money from merchants.
Furthermore, in spite of the author's hesitation about the exact conversation between Voltaire and Chevalier, the lecturer contends that according to witnesses, Chevalier used to jog down everything happening in every night of his life and also he kept his notes and referred them whenever needed.
Eventually, the reading states that his escape from prison could not have happened through jail's ceiling in Venice and he must have bribed to free himself. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that there were also a lot of people in the prison even with better connection and relationships with prisoner-keepers-in-charge who could have made them free. Thus, this hypothesis about giving money is not true about him. Moreover, the presence of an old Venetian document has proved that the ceiling of the jail he attended, repaired soon after he became free. This ceiling would not been repaired unless some damages had been occurred there.
