Both the reading and listening parts offer two opposite views about the causes of the Little Ice Age. While the passage lists three possible factors for this incidence; the professor, on the other hand, casts doubts on the accuracy of these factors by referring to the most updated information.
First of all, the article referred to the cooling caused by disrupted gulf currents as one of the feasible reason for this event; on the contrary, the lecturer refutes the validity of this factor. As he explains, this factor is accountable at the northern hemisphere in places such as North America and Europe; nevertheless, the identical event has also occurred in New Zealand and South Africa which are located in the southern hemisphere. As long as this factor cannot explain the occurrence of the Ice Age at the southern hemisphere, it cannot be the cogent cause of the Ice Age.
Secondly, meanwhile, the text stated that the dust and dark cloud caused by the volcanic eruption is also another factor of the Little Ice Age; the instructor, disapproves the accuracy of this factor too. According to his description, the dust released by the volcanic eruption can be responsible for this event if it would be in the massive volume. Furthermore, this huge amount of dust is also possessed the visual effects such as the colorful sunset or sunrise. Since there is no record about these types of visual alteration from that period, the volcanic eruption is not that much severe to be accountable for this Little Ice Age.
Finally, the passage asserts that the decrement of the human population on that duration is the third reason of the ice age since by the decline of population, trees had replaced the crops and earth became cooler. In contrast, the professor challenges the logic of this factor too. Based on his assertation, the low population size was not continued for long enough duration to lead this event. The population was recovered so quickly, and all forests with trees were converted to the cultivated lands for agriculture purpose. Thus, this period was not that much long enough to lead the decrement of temperature and the Little Ice Age.
