Essay topics: Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane. This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.
The lecturer challenges the topic proposed in the reading that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail. And she thinks that it is not clear that cloud seeding is effective because these evidences have questions.
First, the article suggests that experiments in the laboratory support the idea that cloud seeding is effective. However, the professor points out that cloud seeding would prevent any precipitation in real life, which is also a bad thing. because no clouds could engender rain, it would cause drought to harm crops from a different reason.
Second, the essay supposes that there is evidence about the effectiveness of cloud seeding from several countries around the world. But the lecturer considers that we cannot compare crops in asian countries to crops in the united states. because the regions of crops in asian countries are in the cities which is repleted with air pollution as chemicals to interact with crops. Whereas the interaction does not occur in unpolluted area such as fields and farms in the united states. Thus, we cannot execute this comparison.
Third, the passage indicates that a few local studies support the value of cloud seeding. Nevertheless, the professor argues that local studies are also unconvincing. because this reduction of hail damage is also occurred in eastern, southern and northern area, the reduction may be a natural variation rather than a particular result of cloud seeding.
