The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the decline of frog population around the world. Although the reading mentions some solutions to save frogs from extinction or reduction in numbers, the lecturer finds them not practical and explains three problems with these solutions.
First of all, the reading states that the chemical pesticides used in farms lead frogs’ serious breathing problems and cause them extinct. However, the lecturer explains that elimination of chemical pesticides would not be an economical solution since it results in the reduction of cultivation of crops so a farmers would become unsatisfied. Enacting regulations would probably contribute to lower yield of harvesting crops.
Furthermore, the reading addresses the decline in number of frogs to the existence of some fungus which prevent frogs from absorbing water through their skin. On the other hand, the lecturer asserts that there are two problems with wiping out the fungus. Firstly, the researchers should allocate time to find each frog individually to treat them and capture them to recur their skin. Secondly, they should do the same for every offspring in the next generation which would be not only too complex and time-consuming, but also this approach would be wasting money.
Eventually, the reading explains that human activities and draining excessive water from frogs' natural habitat such as lakes and wet lands will threaten frog population. In contrast, the lecturer argues that while some believe that human activities have deleterious impact on frog population, there are some other important factors that influence their decline more and that is , global warming which effect the whole species and habitats by increasing the rate of water evaporation as a whole. Thus, human interfere have little or none effect on frog extinction.
