tpo 8 the Chevalier
The reading passage and the lecture given by the professor provide contrasting opinions on the memoir of the chevalier de Seingalt. The professor argues that the memoir is an accurate historical account while the reading passage suggests that the memoirs are a distorted version of actual events that took place to make himself look more glamorous and adventurous.
Firstly, the passage mentions that chevalier, who claimed to be very wealthy had to borrow vast amounts of money from a Swiss merchant. therefore, the writer of the passage implies that the chevalier must not have been very wealthy, otherwise he would not have had to borrow money. The professor counters this argument by claiming that the chevalier had lots of wealth in terms of assets such as property. it would have taken quite some time to sell these assets and obtain cash. therefore, according to him, borrowing money from the lender doesn't necessarily mean he was poor.
Secondly, the writer of the passage doubts the accuracy of the conversations that the chevalier had with the famous writer voltaire presented in the memoir as it is quite impossible to remember conversations without distortions years later when the chevalier was writing his memoirs. The counter argument provided by the lecturer is that the chevalier made notes every night after having conversations with voltaire and eye witness accounts suggest that the chevalier always considered the notes when he bean to write his memoirs later on.
Finally, the passage doubts the authenticity of his version of events, when escaping a prison in venice, Italy. The writer suggests that the daring escape was a ficticios event, he claims that chevalier was released by bribing the jailers since the chevalier was politically well connected in venice. The professor disagrees with this conclusion. he bases his view on the fact that there were far more well connected prisoners being held in the prison at that time who couldn't escape. Also, old Venetian records of that time show that a ceiling had to be repaired in the prison which provides credence to the account of the chevalier.
