The lecture and passage both talk about whether the originally silver coin in the United States was from norse explorers was historical evidence or a fake. The lecture gives three reasons to contradict the statements mentioned in the reading passage.
first, the reading passage mentioned that the coin was discovered in Maine is located far from the sites of norse settlements. Thus, the coin may not have a connection with norse. however, the lecture undermines this reasoning. It says that the native american has traveled long distances, they might reach to Canada to meet norse. Therefore, they would bring coins back with them.
Second, the reading passage seems to indicate that no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the norse. Nevertheless, the speaker asserts that the norse might not bring coins with them when they first came to america. when they went back to Europe and back to america, they would take the coins back with them.
Third, speaking of the useless of coins in america; the reading passage claims that native north americans did not recognize silver coins as money. however, the speaker points out that the norse could use coins to attract native north americans' attention by beauty. For example, native north americans could use coins to make jewelries. As a result, the norse might trade with native north americans by coins.
