Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary's claim.

First, the National Geographic Society put together a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary's records and equipment. At the end of the was, the committee concluded that Peary's accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole.

Second, a recent expedition provides support for Peary's claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. Skeptics used to argue that Peary could not have traveled that fast, since even modern snowmobiles take longer to cover the same distance. However, a British explorer named Tom Avery recently made the same trek in less than 37 days. In fact, Avery used the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had. Thus, Peary's claims are not impossible, and he very well might have been telling the truth.

Third, there are photographs taken by Peary that support his claim to have reached the North Pole. Measuring the shadows in Peary's photographs makes it possible to calculate the Surf s position in the sun. The Surf s position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Surf s position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. This provides strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and took the photographs there.

The writer of the reading passage believes that despite of all the skeptic historians’ exclamations regarding the invalidity of the following issue, well-known arctic explorer named Robert peary reached the north pole in 1909. Supporting his opinion he provides three reasons. The professor, however, rejects his arguments as follows.

To begin with, the author states that after the expedition, National Geographic Society missioned a committee to investigate around the accuracy of peary’s reports about his expedition. this committee conducted the investigations and proved that he was right about his claim. this, however, is rebutted by the professor arguing that the members of the committee were in fact a couple of peary’s friends who funded his expedition. Therefore, they cannot be considered as credible individuals to do the investigation. this is in direct contradiction to what the reading passage mentioned about the conducted investigation that is a solid evidence of his veracity.

In addition, unlike the writer who maintains that newly expedition conducted by a British explorer named Tom avery clearly illustrates the possibility of the 37 days travel by the same dogsled to the north pole, the lecturer is of the opinion that they are completely different expeditions. Simply because he is with an airplane which provided him with food supplies. Hence, avery's dogsled carried much less weigh which led to higher speed. this is also in sharp contrast to the reading reasoning regarding the same speed of dogsled used by both avery and peary.

Finally, while the writer asserts that the photographs which has been taken by peary can illustrate that he was actually in the north pole, the lecturer refutes this argument and points out that his primary camera was not able to take clear photos. We have just a few faded and blurred photos which cannot be used to calculate the Surf position in the sky. Again this is another blow to the integrity of the arguments put forth by the author of the reading passage.

For these reasons, the lecturer dismisses the author’s arguments as unconvincing.
