Bird decline
The author of the passage believes that the bird population is significantly going to get lower due to human intervention. However, the speaker in the lecture seems to be quite at odds with him/her. She dismisses the claim by refuting each of the points that were labelled as the reasons for the argument- rising human population, increase in agricultural expansion of lands and use of pesticides.
In the beginning, when the author tries to substantiate his/ her argument using the first reason as the encroachment of human in the habitats of birds, the orator diregards it. She mentions that in spite of development of urban housing and cities, there have been no destruction in habitats of the birds. In fact, the birds like sea gulls and pigeons were found be more in landfills and the town areas respectively.
Moving further, the speaker brings light on the loophole of the next piece of reason belonging to the author. As the writer tries to connect the increasing population with increasing destruction of forest-home of birds, for the agriculture purpose, the lecturer reveals new piece of information on development of productive crops. According to her, there are such crop varieites that have higher crop yield per unit area than before. As a result, there won't be need for more deforestation and thus no habitat will be destructed that could cause bird's decline.
Now, if these contentions were not enough to dismiss the entire argument of the essayist already, the orator pulls one final string off the last piece of the reason for bird's decline. The writer mentions that because of the rise in agriculture pesticide they pollute not only the water but also the poison the other small animals. As a result, when these noxious food and drinks are consumed by the birds, they tend to decline in number due to poisionin. However, the speaker very skillfully condemns this reason by mentioning that there has been development of less harmful pesticides as well as pest resistant crop through gene alteration. This shows that the birds won't be affected in the future anymore.
It is in this manner that the lecturer repudiates each of the reason claimed by teh author as the reason for bird's decline in future.
