The table indicates five different reasons for 100000 UK residents to travel abroad over a span of four years. The bar chart shows the preference of three destinations selected by UK residents over the same span. Overall, it can be seen that vacation is the most common reason for UK residents to travel abroad and Western Europe was the most popular destination.
The majority of UK residents travelled for holiday over the period from 1994 to 1998. The number of UK residents travelled for business and visiting friends or families were very similar over the period, respectively around 2500 and 3200 each year. In contrast, only approximately 1000 people travelled for other reasons each year, particularly in 1995, there were only 896 people travelled for other reasons.
The number of UK residents travelled to Western Europe was significantly higher than to North America and other areas over the period. In 1998, the number of UK residents travelled to the UK reached around 25000, which was the highest in 5 years. It is interesting to note that the number of UK residents travelled to other areas and North America plateaued at around 2000 and 1000 respectively for the first 3 years and slightly increased after 1996.
