TED nets
The main topic of both lecture and passage is about turtle sea which is in dangered by shrimp nets. And a new invented net, named TED, is planned to prevent this danger. The passage claims that TED has several problems and it is better not to be used. The professor on the other hand, completely denies whatever mentioned in the passage through citing several reasons.
First, both passage and lecture talks about some shrimpers argue that turtle gets trapped so rare. According to the passage, using TEDs cost shrimopers to lose some of their shrimps. And shrimper may just once a month catch a turtle, so it does not worth it that they use it. However, the professor refutes this, stating that it is true that it is a rare accident, but imagine how much shrimpers are in the seas. So every month, thousands of turtles trapped and die eventually. As a result, it is a severe danger for turtles and hunters should use TEDs.
Secondly, both the author and the professor discuss alternative methods of protection of sea turtles. And the author argues that in one of these methods, shrimpers can make the time that they allow to keep the nest underwater shorter. And bring the nest up and allow if any turtle exists in it breathe. In contrast, the professor points out that this theory is not possible in reality and shrimpers can not control the time every single time they go for hunting.
Lastly, both the reading and lecture address the subject of TED effectiveness for larger species of endangered sea turtles. The passage goes on to mention that it is not sufficient because some large species can not fit through the escape from the nest even the nest would be TED. Nevertheless, the professor supports a contradictory view as compared to that of the passage; he describes that it is true these are too small for some species, but TEDs can be made larger. When the larger ones are produced, it is not a problem anymore.
