Summarize the points made in the lecture about Altruism, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage about Altruism.

The article states about a topic called Altruism. Altruism is a kind of behavior in which an animal or a human sacrifices their own interest for the sake of other animal or human. However, the professor explains that for doing this type of sacrifices, they all have some self-benefit.

First, the reading provides an example of altruism among human. Human donates his vital organ to their relative and sometimes to the stranger without taking any benefit or reward. On the other hand, the professor refutes this point by saying that after giving something to other people, you will get a lot of appreciation from others. For some human, this non-material thing like appreciation means a lot to him/her. They prefer this kind of reward more than other reward.

Second, the article gives an example of mammal called meerkat. This kind of mammal act as a standing guard when their other mates consuming their food. Whenever, the meerkat see a predator like hawk, it creates an alarm cry for alerting the other meerkat. This acts is a great example of altruism. However, the professor posits that many researcher have found that before providing guard to the other meerkat, it eats their food first. After creating an alarm cry when it sees a predator, it immediately run from their place. So all meerkat have same amount of risk. That's why we cannot state that this is a pure sacrifice without taking any benefit.
