Both the reading passage and the lecture are about the purposes of carved stone balls from around 4000 years ago found in Scotland. That stone balls are described to be in round shape, carved from many stones and with some patterns on it. The reading passage introduces three hypotheses about the meaning of that balls, yet, the professor efficiently casts doubt on all three theories.
First, the professor argues the fact, that the balls were used as weapons. She thinks, that the holes and grooves found in some balls can not be enough evidence for that theory, because if they were used as weapons for hunting or fighting, there should have been some signs of fights and damages as by other neolethic wheapons.
Secondly, the professor gainsays the idea made by the author, that the balls were used for a weighting system. She says, that although the balls are in the same size, they are made with various types of stone, which makes them different in weight: because every stone has its own density, same sized stones can be weight different.
Finally, professor rebuts the last point made by author, which says that carved stone balls could be used as a sign of social status. She mentions, that at that time it was a tradition to bury ones things and utility with the corpse, but none of that balls were found buried with rich poeple. Also that balls have large variance of ornaments, some of them are too simple, and some of them are painted..
As we can see, the professor efficiently challanges all the three ideas made by author, because of the good state of the balls, different masses and the lack of evidence for the last theory.
