The bar chart illustrates the number of families percentage-wise either living in owned homes or rented accommodations in England and Wales between the years 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the first glance at the chart makes it quite evident that home ownership among households have steadily increased while the number of people renting a place has gone down at the end of the period. Although the trends seems pretty consistent, the last year shows an anomaly.
It seems that owning a house has become more popular among families. There is an upwards trend that is gradual throughout 1918 to 1991. It was least famous to own homes in 1918 while most trendy in 2001, when about 68 percent owned private abodes. We observe a plateau during the decade before 2001, while a sudden drop follows it in 2011 when numbers drop to 64 percent.
The percentage of renters show a downwards trend throughout the time period. It was about 78 percent, highest ever, in 1918 after which it came down to below 70 percent in 1939. Although it remained same for about 15 years or so, the decline continued again up until 2001. The lowest ever figure was recorded that year at only 30 percent. However, there is a slight rise visible in the next decade once again.
