The graph compares average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in 4 countries: United Kingdom (the UK), Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007. It can be clearly seen that although at first the UK and Sweden were two countries that have the highest CO2 emissions, as the years went by the figures for that in the 2 countries had the tendency of decreasing. In contrast, CO2 emissions in Italy and Portugal gradually were gradually increasing in the same period of time.
In 1967, the UK and Sweden’s people emit the most CO2 emissions: 12 metric tonnes and 10 metric tonnes respectively. The CO2 emissions of Italy and Portugal were far more less than that: over 4 metric tonnes & less than 2 metric tounnes correspondingly. In the following years, while CO2 emission of the UK was gradually decreasing the figures of that for Sweden, Italy and Portugal were rising quite rapidly.
In 1977, CO2 emissions in Sweden hit its peak at over 10 metric tonnes and began to drop sharply. After 1977, CO2 emissions in the UK continued to decline slightly while the figures of that in Italy and Portugal were increasing gradually.
After the drop of CO2 emissions in Sweden starting from 1977, the figure for that began to fall less rapidly after reaching 7 metric tonnes in 1987 and continued to decline until it hit a peak of about 5 metric tonnes in 2007. Starting from 1987, while CO2 emissions in Italy and Portugal were rising and hit their peaks of 8 metric tonnes and 5 metric tonnes in 2007 CO2 emissions in the UK continued to decline slowly until it hit a bottom of about 9 metric tonnes in the same year.
