Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
According to the reading passage, the Salton Sea's salinity is increasing because of
faster evaporation rate compared to that of replaced water, which results in local
distinction of populations of fish and birds. Three solutions are proposed for preventing
the salinity increase, none of which is realistic and practical enough to solve the problem.
First, desalination facilities which turn the water from liquid to vapor form,
separate it from the salt and cool the vapor down to form salt-free water again, can be
used to reduce the salinity; however, although this process reduces the amount of salt in
water, it gives rise to other problems. For example, the material which is left consists of
salt and other chemicals like selenium which is detrimental to people's health, and takes
a drastic toll on people's lives in case they breathe it in.
Second, enlisting ocean water, which contains less salt, and adding it to the lake
water seem to solve the problem of increased salinity of the Salton Sea. Nevertheless,
there are some problems associated with this procedure as well. The expenses of
constructing pipelines and canals are astronomically high so the government may not
disburse such huge amount of money to subsidize the construction project. Moreover,
the nearest shore of the Pacific Ocean is a hundred kilometers away from the lake, and
building such long canals is not economically reasonable.
Another solution is building some walls which separate different parts of the lake
so that water with high salinity do not get mixed with the freshwater from small rivers.
The downside of this solution is that it cannot be considered as a long term solution due
to the fact that the region is geologically very active, which means that strong
earthquakes occur frequently. As a result, the first earthquake can eradicate the whole
wall system, and separated water will mix back again.
