The passage highlights the advantages of pruning. However, the points made by the lecturer showed that pruning could be harmful, if carried out carelessly. He described the silver maple tree of his neighbor to illustrate how poor pruning may end up in a disaster.
First of all, an improper pruning, called tree topping, leads to many weak side branches. Cutting the tip of the branches not only enhances side branching but also accelerates the branch growth. Therefore, they may break off easily and fall on the vehicles or the pedestrians.
Second, removing a considerable amount of leaves dramatically decreases photosynthesis. In that case the poor tree starves and dies. The non-vital branches cannot bear harsh weather conditions. Dead trees are a potential hazard for the neighborhood. Moreover, parasites tend to invade the dead wood and weaken the tree further.
Finally, tree topping results in several weak branches and an eyesoring shape of the crown of the tree. This ugly appearance is in complete contrast with the main idea of pruning.
This is why the lecturer believes that in order to have a healthy and beautiful tree, pruning should be practiced very wisely
