Why dinosaurs are not considered to be endotherms
The reading and the lecture both are about the question whether dinosaurs can be considered as endotherms. The author of the reading feel that there are three possible explanations of a dinosaur being an endotherm. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He explains that scientists all over the world think that the reasons stated in passage are enough to classify dinosaurs as endotherms.
To begin with, the author aurgues that dinosaur fossils have been recovered from the polar regions. The article mentions that like most endotherms, dinosaurs can stay active in such harsh conditions, only if they keep a temperature well high above their surroundings. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the discovery of fossils does not necessarily mean dinosaurs were endotherms. This is because the polar regions back then were warmer enough for non-endotherms to survive. Additionally, he says that maybe the dinosaurs only lived there in the warmer months and during cold winters migrated or hibernated like most reptiles.
Secondly, the writer suggests that endotherms have a body structure that allows physical activity like running. In the article, it is said that the location of legs on all endotherms is beneath their body, which is also in the case of dinosaurs. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that position of legs cannot be considered as a valid criteria to classify dinosaurs as endotherms. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that dinosaurs were of very large shape, and so required a body structure that could support their body weight. And this large size can have many advantages for the dinosaurs.
Finally, the author posits that the bones of endotherms consists of structures known as Haversian canals. Moreover, in the article it is stated that these canals are an important characteristic of endothermy and is responsible for rapid growth of the body. Also, the fossilized bones of dinosaurs contain these canals. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that along with Haversian canals, the dinosaurs also have found to possess growth rings. These are an indicator of measure of how fast body growth takes place. He notes that the growth rings have shown that the dinosaur grows slowly during cooler periods than during the warm climate. These fluctuations between rapid growth and slow growth is in contradiction with the characteristic of endothermy where animals only grow rapidly.
So, this is how the lecturer opposes what is stated in the reading paragraph.
