Organic food
The reading and the lecture are both about the benefits of organic foods such as fruits and vegetables. According to the reading passage, there are several benefits to the consumption of organic foods, which eventually may have a significant impact on human health. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the article. She suggests that foods grown organically are not as wholesome as they seem to be.
First of all, many organic farmers use chemicals, known as the unofficial pesticides, whose possible negative impact, as to when the organic food is consumed, has been proven. In addition, organic fruits and vegetables grown with the use of chemical fertilizers are detrimental to health and may even lead to the development of Parkinson's disease. However, the author of the reading refers to the research findings, according to which the intake of artificial additives found in non-organic food harms children. In addition, he states that since organic foods do not contain pesticides, there is no reason for concern about the quality of this product.
Furthermore, farmers using organic technologies may cause more serious environmental problems by applying pesticides, which end up becoming waste, polluting the land and water. Given the fact that organic farms need much more acreage to grow the same amount of crop than do large corporations, more land needs to be cleared of forests, leading to deforestation. However, the author of the reading contends that unlike traditional agricultural methods, organic farming using negligible amounts of chemicals pursues environmentally-friendly practices.
Additionally, the lecturer puts forth the idea that the production of organic food does not actually favor small farms owing to the fact that large corporations cultivate similar but non-organic crops at a smaller cost. Since 1982, when it became far-famed to grow organic foods, large corporations entered the market by producing organic vegetables and fruits but selling the crops under the sister companies’ labels. This counters the point made in the article, according to which organic food benefits the small farms.
Overall, the evidence referred to by the lecturer challenges the idea that organic farming is as beneficial as the reading states.
