Dog Grooming's Experience

On the day of Christmas, we had a new member, and his name is Buddy. My puppy is a light golden tan Yorkie, and he fitted perfectly in the palm of my hand. Regularly, he was groomed once a month at PetSmart to avoid grooming concerns into adulthood. However, during the quarantine periods, I decided to groom my dog at home so that we could maintain social distance and protect our health.

Through Amazon, I purchased proper pet grooming tools at a high rate and positive feedback from customers. I frequently watched videos about dog grooming, read some tips online, and recorded the useful information in a notebook. By doing this, I could be more knowledgeable about the process and become a confident groomer. In the beginning, I showered Buddy to make sure he was entirely clean before clipping his coat. Blowing dryer has been a tool my dog hated the most while drying his hair, so I saved Buddy's favorite treat when completing this part.

The following challenges occurred when I turned on the clipper. My puppy was anxious about its noise; consequently, he ran away from it. Since then, my confidence in transforming his appearance faded. To keep him in good condition, I then spent time calming him down by giving some treats and let him be kind with the machine. As a beginner, I always checked the information I recorded in my notebook; then, I started with a bit of his fur and trimmed more. It was inevitable that I made a mistake; I could not control the clipper so that one cut went deep into his coat. By the time Buddy's eyes stared at me, I understood that he was startled and hurt. One of the exciting things I found from my little dog was that he prefers to watch other dogs' videos. Thus, I set up a screen at my place to divert his attention.

After finishing his body, I combed his fur again and continued working on his face. Nevertheless, Buddy started moving around and refused to remain calm. Again, I felt the challenge to complete the clippings. It was the second day I was trying to handle this task correctly. In the process, I brushed forward Buddy's hair and fur around his eyes. My little dog had various dirty areas under his eyes; therefore, I put an effort to trim these spots a little bit at a time and made sure Buddy was not in pain. Besides, I applied the solution to these areas to erase them more comfortably. It was necessary not to allow any tiny hairs to annoy his eyes and irritate him. Fortunately, Buddy increasingly became friendly to the grooming process and felt more comfortable. Notwithstanding, my dog's coat had a blunt edge cut at the first look and appeared unprofessional due to scissors' overuse. I then watched more videos to find out the solution to this issue. As a result, I discovered that using thinning shears would resolve this problem.

The task could not be completed if I forgot to trim his nails. My little dog had overgrown nails, causing walking problems and injuring other people when he played with them. Also, I had to pay attention while working on these sensitive areas, which could be stressful and uncomfortable for Buddy. At the first attempt, he created scratches on my thigh and was much less likely to cooperate. During the grooming session, I wore long pants to prevent him from hurting me. I learned from the videos that trimming nails too short can cause the dog to be agitated. Thus, the nail clipper went slowly and under my control. Because Buddy has dark nails, it is difficult to identify where to stop cutting. Accordingly, I initially cut off the tips of the nails and divided this task into short sessions. In addition, I prepared a cauterizing powder to stop the nails from bleeding if I cut them too short. During the process, I was concerned with his reactions and ensured he felt pleased with the clippings.

Furthermore, I used ear cleaners to clean Buddy's ears properly, helping him get rid of further infections. My dog's teeth also needed to be brushed to maintain odor-free and prevent him from having periodontal disease's clinical condition. He responded positively to me while brushing his teeth, so it was a pleasure to handle this task in a brief time. I would maintain doing this task at least twice a week for the best result, but I have learned that it would be ideal if I did every day.

With concentration and patience, I finally felt relieved and satisfied with his fresh look. Because I did not give up after several rough starts, I can now be more confident to groom my puppy at home. More importantly, my dog does not feel terrified when being groomed anymore. However, if I felt unsafe to continue during the sessions, I would let Buddy visit a professional groomer to complete the grooming task.
