avocados
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to what health benefits the avocado possesses. More specifically, in the reading passage, the writer puts forth the idea that they are rich in folic acids, help lower blood pressure, are excellent for pregnant women, and are cheap meat substitutes. However, the lecturer is quick to point out some serious flaws in the writer's claims. While the professor admits that avocados are healthy to a certain extent, they are not only detrimental if consumed in large quantities, but costly for the environment. He addresses, in detail, how the points made by the writer are problematic.
First and foremost, the author points out that avocados are great at reducing blood pressure. Many professionals in the field, however, stand in opposition to this claim. The speaker from the reading, for example, states that the fruit contains 29 grams of fat per piece. So, if people ignore the intake, and simply consume exorbitant amounts of avocado under the premise that it reduces blood pressure, they may actually gain weight. As a result, their blood pressure will increase. This directly refutes the claims made by the writer in the text.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, also claims that avocados can help reduces the chances of miscarriage in pregnant women, and also prevent neural tube defects. Again, the lecturer does not agree with this claim. He asserts that pregnant women should avoid avocados as they reduce milk supply and damage the mammary glands. Additionally, he goes on to state that avocados increase the sensitivity of the baby's stomach.
Finally, the author sums up his argument by positing that purchasing avocados will help consumers save money, especially if they are vegetarians. Avocados have a fleshy texture similar to meat and seafood, so he states that avocado consumption is a more economic choice, since meat is more expensive than fruits and vegetables. Not surprisingly, the speaker finds fault with this assertion made in the text. He corrects the writer by explaining that avocados are not cheap; for the price of a single avocado, you can actually buy an entire pound of apples or bananas. Further, growing avocados is a very costly process as it requires many gallons of water, consequently depleting the Earth's natural resources.
All in all, it is evident that the author of the text and the lecturer have conflicting opinions about whether avocados are truly a superfood or not. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
