The chart shows the unemployment situation in Australia in the year 2012.
The presented line graph compares Australian cities and countrysides in terms of their proportion of the unemployed in the year 2012.
Overall, in 2012, the unemployment rate in the countryside was higher than that in the cities. While the percentage of people out of work in rural areas underwent a downward trend, a substantial rise was recorded in the unemployment rate in urban regions.
At the beginning of the year 2012, the proportion of jobless people in Australian urban areas accounted for approximately 2.2 percent, which was nearly half of the unemployment rate in the countryside. Over the first and the second quarter of the year, there were converse trends for the two figures. Whereas the unemployment rate in Australian cities gradually increased to about 4 percent, the percentage of the unemployed in rural regions witnessed a decline of 1.5 percent.
From the third quarter of the year, both figures had entered a period of instability, ranging between 2 percent and 5.3 percent. At the end of the year 2012, the unemployment rate in Australian rural regions then reached 5 percent, which was almost the same as that in urban areas.
