The Plain of Jars is an archaeological site in the Southeast Asian country of Laos. At the site, hundreds of large stone jars, ranging in size from one to three meters, are scattered across the countryside These numerous large containers are around 2,000 years old. The original purpose of the jars is unknown, but archaeologists have several theories.
First; the jars may have been used for fermentation. In fermentation, food or drink is left in a sealed container in order to undergo a chemical change According to some local residents, the jars were originally constructed by a king in order to ferment a special beverage to celebrate a great victory It would be possible to use the jars for fermentation, so the local people's story could be true.
Second, the jars may have been used for water storage. Laos experiences rainy and dry seasons, and finding water during the dry seasons can be difficult. The Plain of Jars is located near ancient trade routes, where traveling traders may have needed drinking water. The jars could have been constructed to collect water during the rainy season so that traders passing through the area would have a source of drinking water during the dry seas on.
Third, it is possible that the Plain of Jars was an ancient burial site, and the jars were tombs (places where human remains are deposited). Much of the contents of the ancient jars is now gone, but they are large enough to hold human remains. Furthermore, artifacts such as metal tools, jewelry, and glass beads have been found in some of the jars. Burying the dead alongside valuable artifacts was a common practice in ancient cultures. Ancient people may have buried their dead in the jars along with the artifacts
In this set of materials, the reading and writing both discuss the Stone jars found at the plain of jars, famous historical site. The article strongly postulates that these jars serve different purposes 2,000 years ago and, provide three theories to endorse its idea. However, the lecturer argues that mysterious jars' purpose is still uncertain, and arguments made in the reading are dubious; and gainsays each of the argument.
First and foremost, the article begins by asserting the theory that stone jars could be used for fermentation in the past, most probably A king used it to ferment his beverage. On the other hand, the lecturer dismisses the point by insisting this theory could not be true. Due to the reason that making jars with stones is a meticulous task that could be expensive and time-consuming. Moreover, the traditional way was to make jars with clay. Therefore, why ancient people could have wasted their resources in creating a fermentation jar with stone when clay jar could serve the same purpose and was easier to make.
Furthremore, the lecturer takes the position by stating theory about jar's usage as a water storage is completely wrong too. Owing to the fact that Plain of the jar location is not only closer to the ancient trade route but also near to to the stream and river bank. There is no need for water storage jars when travellers could easily get drinking water from the river and other resources. These claims refute the writer implication that jars could have been used for water storage to the travellers as the location of the Ancient site is closer to trade routes used by past travellers.
Ultimately, the writer wraps up its arguments by declaring that jars ware probably a burial site as archeologists have found many precious ornaments in the jars that suggest these are possessions of departed souls. Not surprisingly, the writer takes an issue with it by contending though tools and other jewelry items are found in the jars, there is a big flaw in the theory. that is those jars are not covered.while it was common practice that when people buriedpossession they covered the jars so that possessions or ashes remained safe. Therfore this theory do not hold value.
