Jane austin painting
The reading and the lecture are both about Jane Austen self-portrait whether it her or not. Whereas the author of the reading states that this painting resembles Jane and provide some evidence, the lecturer suggest that the painting did not resemble Jane. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, some members of Austen's family agrees that this painting is for her. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that cannot be possible. Furthermore, he mentions that it was 70 years since Jane died so there is no way one her living family have seen her alive.
Secondly, the reading states that portrait represent one of the sketches in Cassandra's. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that Austen family is a big family. In addition, he points out that the family have a lot of teenagers.
Finally, the reading claims that the style of the painting shows it is similar to Ozias Humphrey and he was active in the same year when Jane was a teenager. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that the one who sells the canvas did not sell any canvas in London until Jane was 27 years old.
