The pie chart illustrates data about the main causes of agricultural land degradation, while the table highlights the way they exerted an impact on various parts of the world during the 1990s.
Overall, it can be seen that over-grazing and deforestation are the two main reasons making agricultural land become less productive. Besides, Europe saw the most serious degradation in land quality, with its figure far higher than that of the other two regions.
Looking at the pie chart, over one-third of land was reduced in productivity because too many animals were fed on them, followed by 30 percent deforested. While that, over-cultivation was also a notable factor, accounting for 28 percent of the total degradation, while other causes were considerable factors.
Regarding the table, nearly a quarter of land was degraded in Europe, with around 9.8 percent caused by deforestation. Oceania witnessed a slighter change, as only 13 percent of its land productivity was influenced. Surprisingly, only one-twentieth of the total land suffered from degradation in North America, and over-cultivation was the main reason here, responsible for about two-thirds of this figure.
