Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
In this increasingly integrated world, the number of people who settle in another country for work and study purposes is on the rise. Many people claim that having to use a foreign language in their everyday life is bringing some serious problems, both social and practical ones. This essay will outline several reasons why, despite such disadvantages, life in another country may be more of a wonderful experience.
To begin with, there is no doubt that people who move to live in a foreign country encounter many challenges. For the first few months or even years, they find themselves unaccustomed to the presence of a language that is not their mother tongue in all aspects of life. Such language barriers could result in difficulties in socializing, studying or working, and even in recreational activities like going shopping or visiting a museum. Consequently, many newcomers feel really stressed and isolated due to the lack of connection to the people and their culture here.
On the other hand, these problems could be easily overcome if people have enough effort to change their situation. The first factor contributing to this, definitely, is to learn how to speak a foreign language. Although many people argue that the process of language learning could be demanding and challenging, having the chance to immerse yourself in the language is likely to help you make rapid progress and familiarise yourself with it in no time. Once the initial stages have passed, people will find it really rewarding since they can now enjoy a whole new unique culture and enjoy the fascinating things which they have never experienced back in their homeland.
Furthermore, technological advances also play an important role in keeping those challenges minimal. With the help of modern applications, people can now communicate effectively no matter what languages they are using. Additionally, the increasing availability of information on the Internet enables them to learn more about culture shocks and adapt to a new environment with relative ease. Thanks to all those aforementioned inventions, people with little language proficiency could easily get along with others and get used to new circumstances.
To sum up, it is apparent that meeting several problems when living in a country where you have to speak another language is inevitable. However, such problems could be tackled via a lot of methods, and once you get rid of them, the wonderful experiences you get will be totally worthy.
