Imprisonment Statistics
The provided bar graph depicts the figure for imprisoned people in five distinct countries over the period of 50 years.
A glance at the graph reveals that in most countries, the number of prisoners exhibited fluctuating trend, while the statistics of Great Britain experienced an upward trend and rose the most dramatically.
It is explicitly obvious that in 1930, Great Britian had the lowest number of people in prisons, while that of Canada was the highest one, with 120000 people. However, over the 50-year period, there is a significant increase in the figure for prisoners in Great Britian, from nearly 30000 to over 80000 in 1980. In contrast, from 1930 to 1950, the number of prisoners in Canada slightly fluctuated around 110000 and then saw a sharp fall to under 90000 in 1980.
As presented in the graph, the general trend for three other countries is fluctuating. Whereas Australia and New Zealand saw a fluctuation in the number of people in prisons between 1930 and 1980, the United States only experienced a fractional fluctuation around 120000 and peaked at nearly 140000 in 1980, becoming the highest figure in 5 countries.
