Essay topics:

The mass extinction occurred at the end of the Triassic period

The reading and lecture are both about the mass extinction occured at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago. The author of the article believes three explanation as reasons for this mass extinction. However, the speaker effectively casts doubt on these three arguments presented by writer. To be more specific, she claims that, although plausible, those explanations are not good explanations.

To begin with, the penman argues that the decline in sea level was the cause for the massive extincion, citing the fact that it could have disasterous effects on living environment of animals. However, the speaker presents a hole in this argument, by highllighting the fact that the coastal regions are able to adapt to harsh conditions especially when the changes occur gradually and in the course of several million years. Moreoover, she asserts that in order to impose dangerous effect, the environment should face a sudden change.

Secondly, the essayist suggests that massive cooling in climate could be the cause of massive extinction, citing that this could be result of enourmous volcanic activities during the end of the Triassic period. Never would the orator accept this as a viable possibility since gases produced from volcanic activities such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) are able to combine with water and find their way to earth as a form of rains. Furthermore, the lecturer cites the fact that the density of this gas may not be enough to cause a huge extinction.

Finally, the author believes that a strike with a asteroid could initiate this extinction, creating dust in air and causing a lack of sunlight for animals and plants. On the contrary, the professor asserts that there is not a single evidence proving this belief. In addition, she provide an evidence of collicsion, but she further discusses that this evidence dates back to 20 milion years ago, far before the mass extincion; thereby lessening credibillity in author's argument.
