Essay topics:

More and more people choose to move to other countries to study higher
education. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

An increasing number of high school graduates decide to go
abroad to attend a university. In my opinion, the merits
outweigh the drawbacks.
There are considerable benefits of entering a foreign
university. The first benefit is that students can become
more self-reliant when living and studying in a foreign
country. This is because they have to learn how to take care
of themselves, cook and do part-time jobs to cover living
expenses. If they have a great sense of self-reliance, their
willpower will be strengthened, thereby helping them
effortlessly overcome challenges in their future life. Another
merit might be that foreign institutions can provide
international students with high-quality courses, experienced
teachers and modern facilities. As a result, these can create
an optimum academic environment for them to reach their
full potential. Finally, if more and more high school
graduates decide to enroll in prestigious universities
abroad, they can become skilled workers and contribute to
the development of their homeland in various fields after
graduation.
There are potential drawbacks of applying for a university
overseas. The main drawback is that students who follow
this trend could suffer from various problems such as
language barriers, homesickness and culture shock. These
problems could adversely affect their study at school and
even result in poor academic performance. Another
disadvantage might be that if students decide to go abroad
to enter a university without having a scholarship, this could
put heavy financial pressure on their families. This is
because the tuition fees of foreign institutions are very
expensive. Finally, this trend could worsen the problem of
brain drain in the students’ homeland because many
countries tend to attract international students to stay after
graduation by giving them opportunities to be naturalized.
In conclusion, the merits of enrolling in an overseas
university seem to outweigh the drawbacks because this
trend can make students more self-reliant, provide them with
an optimum academic environment and create a qualified
workforce for their motherland. Given this situation, it seems
that high school students should be encouraged to study
higher education abroad.
