Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage talks about the three inaccurate and unreliable events recorded in Chevalier’s memoir. The lecturer does not agree with the passage and suggests the opposite.
Firstly, the author of the passage says that claims made by Chevalier in the memoir about his affluence while living in Switzerland are false because he was seen borrowing money from a Swiss merchant. However, the professor finds this reasoning flawed and suggests that since he spends a huge amount of money on gambling and parties, a lot of money has been used up and it takes time to convert wealth into money. So, he has to borrow it from someone until he could get money from his wealth.
Furthermore, the author says that Chevalier’s account of his conversations with Voltaire cannot be accurate because the conversations happened years ago. So, it is impossible that someone could remember the exact phrases for a long time. Again, the professor does not agree with this and says that Chevalier used to make notes of his conversations with Voltaire at night after their talk. To substantiate his argument, the lecturer said that many witnesses confirmed the details of the talk mentioned in the memoir.
Lastly, the author cites that the prison escape from the rooftop of prison in Venice is not true because Chevalier had political connections in Venice so he could easily bribe the jailers to free him. The professor does not agree with it and says that other prisoners who had more powerful political contacts than Chevalier couldn’t bribe the jailers. Also, the Venice police documents confirm this by mentioning a ceiling repair of the Chevalier’s cell.
In conclusion, the author and the professor have conflicting views. Thus, it would be difficult for them to come to a common ground.
