Both the passage and the lecturer center on the issue of whether the giant short-faced beat was omnivorous or carnivorous. While the passage suggests that this species was carnivorous, the lecturer refutest this idea and considers them to be omnivorous. The passage presents three reasons to support its idea. However, the speaker claims that although the passage seems rational, in fact, it is unfounded and not so practical by propsing three counterarguments.
First of all, the passage mentions that the bears belong to the carnivores because of their bone composition. Their bones have been shown to consist of a greater amount of N-15 than N-14, which signifiies that the bones belonged to the carnivorous species. On the other hand, the speaker counters this idea by saying that although there is evidence showing higher ratio of nitrogen-15, it does not draw a clear conclusion. The high ratio of N-15 doesn't serve as a proof that the bears exlude the habit of feeding on plants or other vegetations. Instead, the bears might also consider plant species as their food.
Secondly, the reading indicatest that the size of the sheers of the bear is an inkling that this species belongs to carnivores. The reason is that their maximum standing height exceeded eleven foot on their hind legs, which made them the largest bear type. This compares to the polar bear, the largest species of hear nowadays, which nearly exclusively belongs to carnivores. However, the lecturer disproves this idea by pointing out that the two bear species live in totally different environments. While the short faced bear lived on land, the polar bears lived in areas surrounded by ice or sometimes in close to aquatic regions. As a result, meat foods seem to be the only food choice for polar bears because there are no plants around them. Moreover, short faced bear lived on lands, so they can prey on a variety of food sources, inlcuding woods, plants, and animals. So, this reason is irrational.
Lastly, the passage points out that the short-faced bear had longest legs among the hear species that allowed them to chase animals and feed on them. Also, they had claws that were ideal for catching preys. In contrast, the speaker is against this opinion. The speaker says that although they have long legs, the legs are thin. This is particularly risky and hazardous when they chase down on living creatures or animals. Also, their claws were for the purpose of running at slow speed and over a longer distance to look for different types of foods rather than just for animals. Accordingly, this concept is unfeasible and has its downside as well.
