memoir
The article states that the memoir of Chevair written by himself was distorted just to make his life more appealing . Three reasons are provided to support this claim. However, the professor disagreed, casting doubts on each of the given reasons.
First, the reading claims that the memoir depicting Chevair as wealthy was not true since he got all the money he spent on gambling from a loan service. The professor refutes this claim by stating that the man was not poor as the writer had depicted. In reality, he had properties which he sold for money. However, it took long for him to get the money for the sale, which is usually how such sales occur in Switzerland. Thus, he had to get a loan to spend till he has access to the money from properties.
Second, the reading mentions that the acclaimed detailed conversations of the Chevailier with the famous writer, Voltaire, could not be as accurate as it was portrayed in the memoir. The professor casts doubt on this claim by affirming that the man did write down conversations with Voltaire, particularly, every single night. Witnesses also confirmed that they saw him referring to such notes while he writes the memoir a couple of times.
Third, the article posits that the memoir account of his escape from the Vernice’ prison is distorted and untrue. The professor, however, mentions that release through bribery is very unlikely, since other prisoners with more relationship with the wards did not have such advantage of been granted a bail. The professor also mentions the availabilty of a document that talks about the repair of the ceiling in his room. This supported the fact that he must have escaped, not through bribe, but by cutting through the ceiling.
