Wild tuna, a species of large ocean fish, have decreased in number because of overfishing. Recently, attempts have been made to farm tuna by feeding the fish in ocean cages until they become large enough for sale. However, tuna farming has faced several problems and criticisms.
First, female tuna do not lay eggs in captivity, so tuna farmers must capture large quantities of young wild tuna to stock their farms, further reducing wild tuna populations. These young tuna are caged and fed until they are large enough to be sold. Since the captured females in tuna farms cannot lay eggs to replace the tuna that are sold, tuna farmers continue to catch young wild tuna to keep their farms going and so worsen the decline in wild tuna populations.
Second, tuna raised on farms are very expensive because they depend on a costly, high-protein food derived from other fish. Tuna feed almost exclusively on small fish, which supply them with the proteins and nutrients they require. A single tuna can grow more than four meters long, weigh close to 700 kilograms, and eat 70 kilograms of food a day! It is unlikely that tuna farms can remain profitable while supplying so much expensive food for the tuna.
Third tuna confined to ocean cages are likely to become infested with parasites, organisms that feed on and weaken the animal they attach to. Tuna farmers off the coast of southern Australia have had problems with infestations of blood flukes, a type of parasite that lives within the blood vessels and heart of infected fish. Parasite infestations weaken tuna, slow their growth, and can even cause death, usually by making them susceptible to other diseases. Tuna farms in southern Australia have had 10 percent of their tuna die before they could be sold.
Recently there has a debate on whether tuna farming is a good way to utilize in the ocean by the cages or not. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the author proposes three difficulties in the passage against the application of tuna farming. However, the speaker holds the arguments questionable with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that female tuna is not capable to lay eggs in the ocean cage. Therefore, the workers must catch the wild tuna, this behavior decreases the population of wild tuna in the environment. In the listening, however, the professor argues that the workers can inject hormone into the female tuna and cultivate them to lay eggs in an efficient way. As a result, the solution will not hurt the number of wild tuna and the buyer’s health.
Second, the passage points out that the budget spends on buying high-protein foods is extremely high. This is because the foods are abstracted from other fish to provide for tuna farming. On the other hand, the expert suggests that the protein can get from specific plants which will not be so costly compare with fish products. Thus, the payment of tuna foods at farming can be capped low.
Finally, the author brings his skeptical opinion by suggesting that the ocean cages infect certain parasites in the fish body. For example, in southern Australia, the infestation of blood flukes damaged the fish in several ways. Nevertheless, the lecturer takes issues with this claim by contending that the new treatment can be applied to the blood fluke problems. To be specific, the farmers can move the ocean cages from offshore to the deeper water where decreases the possibility of blood flukes live. That is to say, they cannot live in the deep water without the composition from the nearshore to sustain their life cycle.
To sum up, all the points mentioned in the reading passage are not convincible according to the speaker.
