Summarize the main points of the lecture and highlight how the lecture interacts with the text.
Both the reading passage and lecture discuss whether the potrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet is the work of Rembrandt. The former argues that the painting is not Rembrandt's work and it has been removed from his official catlouge, while the latter asserts that potrait is Rembrandt's work.
Firstly, the text mentions that Rembrandt pays a keen attention to the details of the painting like dressing. While in the painting the women is wearing a white linen cap usually worn by the servants and a good quality coat with fur collar which a servant cannot buy. However, to defend the above claim, lecturer contends that the painting was examined and results of xray and pigmentation states that fur collar was added to the top of painting much after the 100 years of the painting. The reason for adding the fur collar was to increase the value of the painting and make the lady look like some former aristrocat.
Secondly, the passage mentions that Rembrandt pays a detailed attention to light and shadow and he is an expert in adjusting light and shadow. But, the face in the painting is brightend by the reflection of the light and the lower side of the face appears to be darker. However, the lecture mentions that the color inconsistency is because of the fur collar which is added later. When the fur collar is removed, the original painting illuminates women's face. The painting looks realistic.
Lastly, the text mentions that painting is done on a wood panel and the panel is made by sticking several pieces of wood. From the past records, none of Rembradts painting is painted on panel glued with pieces of wood. However, to defend the above statement, lecturer asserts that along with the fur, an additional wood panel was added to the painting to make the painting look grand. In fact the wood used to paint the women painting is the same wood by which Rembrandt's other paintings were painted.
