The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
The article talks about several ways to decrease the salinity of the Salton sea which is actually a salty in land lake because it could be at risk of being a dead zone if the salinity keep increasing. In response, the professor explains that it will be great if we could decrease the salinity of the lake, but she says that the ways in the article are not realistic or not practice.
First, the article suggests to remove the salt from the lake in special desalination facilities. However, the professor states that this way will reduce the salinity, but it will cause a serious problem. When the water evaporate, it leaves solid materials behind. this solid material could be chemicals that cause health risk for people, such as the selenium which is toxic, and if it goes into the air and people breath it, it will be a reason of dangerous health issues.
Second, the article says that there is another possible solution which is to dilute the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean. According to the professor, this way would decrease the salinity, but due to the need for constructed canals, this method is very expensive for the government. that's why it is not practice.
Third, the last way in the article is to control the salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections. In contrast, the professor illustrates that this way will not last for long time since the area of the lake is exposed to frequent, intense activities for example: earthquicks. The walls will collapse after an earthquick, and the high salt section will mix back with the main section.
