The cave paintings of Lascaux (in southwestern France) date to around 15,000 B.C.E. and are among the finest examples of prehistoric art known.
There are paintings in the Lascoux caves that have caused a discussion among scientists. The passage provides three reasons why the paintings were drawn so that they cause successful hunt for the people. The lecturer, on the hand, challenges these talking points.
Firstly, the passage suggests that the depiction of large mamals in the paintings proves they were for ensuring successful hunts. That is due to the fact that these large mamals were hunted by prehistoric people. This view is opposed by the lecturer by claiming that there is not enough support for this. For instance, there are paintings of cats in the cave and raindeers which were one of the most common preys are not present in the paintings.
Secondly, the paintings where hunters were shown with animal heads is a representation of a tradition where hunters used to put the animal heads to decieve the preys. This argument is disagreed about by the lecturer as well. According to him, the hunters in the paintings are majorly depicted in horizontal forms showing that they were sleeping rather than hunting where the hunter should stand up during the process.
Thirdly, the depiction of animals for magical purposes has been proposed by the text. The text suggests that people use these paintings for the magical effects that they might have in increasing their luck in hunting rather than mere decorative representations. The professor opposes this point by proposing that in some cultures, people used this depictions for certain ceremonies. In these ceremonies, they used these paintings to communicate with the spirit of their ancestors.
