The chart compares the proportion of owning and renting houses in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the rates of owned and rented accommodation show the opposite trends, with a sharp increase in ownership and a considerable decline in the percentage of renters.
In 1918, the percentage of households in rented accommodation trebled higher than that of owned accommodation, at around 77% and 23%, respectively. Until 1939, there was a steady rise in ownership and a marginal decline in rentals. Rentals reached about 69% in 1939 and then remained stable in 1953 before falling to under 60% in 1961. Meanwhile, ownership rose to 32% in 1939 and stayed unchanged in 1953 before climbing up to 41% in 1961. In 1971, ownership became even with rentals, at 50%.
This downward trend continued for both percentages, with rentals falling to 40% and 32% in 1981 and 1991, respectively, followed by 31% in 2001. Likewise, ownership rose to 60% and 68% in the same years, followed by 69% in 2001. The proportion of owning houses in 2011 decreased slightly, to 64%, while that of renting houses went up to 36%.
