Overall, there was an upward trend in the percentage of people for both fixed and mobile, with the most dramatic rise being seen in the figures for mobile. In addition, fixed generally had the highest figures over the given period, but it was surpassed by mobile from 2001 onwards.
The proportion of subscribers in mobile started at 0.06% in 1994, after which it saw an increase gradually to 1% in 1999. Similar changes can be seen in the figure for fixed, which grew slightly from 1.7% at the beginning of the period to 2.5% until 2000.
Approximately 2.5% of the fixed line mobiles in Africa in 1994, with a subsequent slow increase in the following year and a final increase to 3.1 in 2004. Conversely, the figures for mobile increased rapidly from 2% to 3%, surpassing the fixed in 2001, followed by a rapid rise to 8.8% at the end of the period.
