the two bar charts show the proportion of 14-16 year-old students studying a modern language in an English speaking country, and the top three popular foreign languages.
The first graph compares the percentage of foreign language learners in the 14-16 age group, which is also divided by gender; Meanwhile, the leftover depicts the three favorite languages of these students in a country using English as their mother tongue between 1984 and 2007.
In general, the number of these teenagers tended to decrease after 23 years. Besides, the order of languages remained unchanged over the period.
Most noticeably of all, it can be seen that the data for girls was higher than for boys in both years. The proportion of girls witnessed a moderate downturn by just below ten percent, which doubled that figure for boys. Therefore, the data of both types declined from 49% and 30% to 40% and 35%, respectively.
According to the top common languages, there was the same result for both moments. The portion of German accounted for 20%, then slightly dropped to 15%. French, the most popular language, slipped by half to 25%, while Spanish followed a similar reverse tendency and gradually rose to 10% in 2007.
