The reading claims that the portrait of the teenage girl, which belongs to one of the Austen family members, depicts Jane Austin. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas mentioned by the reading passage dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

The author argues that the portrait was permitted to be used in an addition of Jane’s letters by her family members. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this reason is highly questionable due to the fact that the Jane Austen had died 70 years before the permission was given by her family members. Therefore, it can be easily inferred that none of them could have seen her when she was a teenager.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the resemblance of the portrait to Cassandra’s sketch is another reason to support the claim made in the reading passage. On the contrary, the professor plays up the idea that this resemblance does not prove anything. It is quite likely that portrait depicts a relative of Jane’s as Jane has a large extended family. Her cousins who were teenagers at time might have resembled her. Some even believe that the true subject of the portrait is one of her relatives called Mary Ann Campion.

Finally, the reading asserts that the style of the painting clearly shows that it was painted by Humphrey who was active when Jane was a teenager. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that, there is some evidence that the portrait was printed at a later date. A stamp on the back of the canvas shows that it was sold by a person named William Lag. Based on historical records, he started selling canvases in London when Jane Austen was 27 years old. Since Jane was older than the teenage girl in the painting, the painting was older than the teenage girl in the painting, the painting style cannot verify the painting portrays Jane.
