The line graph illustrates how much money was spent on research in the US over a 28 - years period , starting from 1980.
As can be seen from the graph , the figure for the expenditure of most sectors witnessed an upward trend , except for the downward trends of other groups. Additionally , the health sector was the one which had the highest number of expenditures throughout the period shown , while the other and General Science spent the lowest amount of money on research.
In 1980 , the total amount of money spent on the health area was nearly 7 billion dollars , followed by the Space and Energy groups which cost over 5 billion dollars. In the following years, there was a significant increase in the spending levels of the Health Sector , accounting for nearly 20 billion. Conversely , the amount of money used for both the Space and Energy sector witnessed a fluctuation upward to around 9 and 7 billion respectively.
Meanwhile , despite having the second - ranked on the spending level at 1980 , the figure for other sectors had a gradual decrease to 5 billion at the end of the period. In contrast, the amount of money spent on General Science doubled to 5 billion between 1980 and 2008.
