In 1970, the percentages of people who live in cities in Malaysia and Philippines were around 30%, whereas those in Thailand and Indonesia were 19% and 15%, respectively. From 1990 to 2020, while the portion of urban citizens in Indonesia and Malaysia continuously recorded a significant increase from 20% to 50% and from 45% to 72%, respectively, that figure for Philippines and Thailand remained stable
After 2020, the portion of city population of the 4 countries is expected to go up. In 2040, this figure for Malaysia is the highest, at more than 80%, followed by Indonesia and Philippines with 60% and 50%. Indonesia is predicted to hold the lowest number among the 4 countries in 2040 with 40%.
