The diagram below illustrates how fossils were exposed beneath a cliff as a result of coastal erosion

The diagram shows the process of coastal erosion on a cliff resulting in fossil exposure.

Initially, the cliffside protruded more into the sea. At low tide, the waves could not reach the base of the ocean, while at high tide they could crash up to half the cliff height with considerable power.

As the waves kept crashing into the face of the cliff, the rock layers eroded, causing the cliff to retreat. Consequently, the previously covered lower part of the cliff became exposed, while the top part remained, creating a danger zone where boulders from the top could fall off the cliff.

Eventually, the waves continued to hit the lower parts of the cliff more frequently, which shaved off the bottom layers to expose the fossils buried underneath. All in all, it can be seen that the tidal waves have had a significant impact on the coastline and the finding of fossils there.
