The chart below shows the number of people in Europe who were affected by four types of noise by day and by night in cities and rural areas in 2007.
The given picture demonstrates the quantity of people in Europe who were impacted by noise from traffic, trains, aircraft and industry by time of day and night in urban areas and outskirts in 2007.
Overall, traffic was the main source of causing much more noise than other categories, followed by trains and lastly aircraft. Notably, individuals in both cities and countryside were most-disturbed by all four types of noise during the period of day compared to nighttime.
Noise deriving from traffic was common during the day and the night affected 64 million and 48 million individuals correspondingly, which was double the rural figure for traffic noise (34 million and 24 million respectively). Turning to noise from train, in cities,10 million people were reported to be annoyed by train in the day and 8 million people in the night. In rural areas, the data was slightly lower (8 million and 6 million people).
Aircraft and industry caused less disturbance to people in either cities or suburbs in 2007. Aircraft accounted for 4 million and 1 million city dwellers who were influenced by the noise in the day and the night. Similarly, aircraft noise affected to 2 million people in rural areas at daytime and 1 million people at nighttime. The data of industry noise in the outskirts was negligible and in cities stood at higher number of people affected by industry noise during day and night with the respective figure being 1 million and 0.25 million.
