The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
The line graph illustrates the number of city dwellers in four distinguished Asian from a report between 1970 and 2020, with estimation until 2040.
What stands out from the graph is that the percentage of the population in all four countries experienced an upward trend, with Malaysia showing the most dramatic increase. Starting at the highest point in 1970, just over 30% of citizens in the Philippines lived in urban areas. After some fluctuations over the first 40 years, this figure has risen and is predicted to continue increasing by around 20% by the end of the period. Malaysian city dwellers, which ranked second at 30% at the beginning, have made significant progress. It is also expected to maintain its upward trend until the final year, reaching over 80%, more than double the initial figure.
Finally, the two remaining categories of inhabitants living in urban areas in Thailand and Indonesia, which accounted for nearly 20% and over 10% respectively, showed upward trends throughout the 30-year period. After reaching the same point in 2000, Indonesian city dwellers surpassed the figures for Thailand and the Philippines, and are estimated to be the second highest at 60%.
