Essay topics:

Some believe that research on family history is a useful thing to do, while others disagree. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Recently, tracing familial lineage has become an increasingly popular trend around. While some people believe this is a beneficial practice, others argue that it is meaningless. In this essay, I will discuss both arguments before reaching my final opinion.
On the one hand, proponents of studying ancestral knowledge often highlight its significance in preserving family traditions, raising health awareness and its educational value. Firstly, learning about family history helps people keep valuable stories alive for future generations, which plays a crucial role in perserving their identity and strengthening family connections. Another point is examining family health history may alert people to genetic diseases, which raises their awareness of protecting their health more carefully. Finally, researching the past not only enriches people’s knowledge of their family, but also the history of their country and the world such as cultures, and events during different historical periods in which their ancestors lived in.
On the other hand, opponents of this trend argue that it is time-consuming, expensive and may not yield meaningful results. While the process can take a large amount of time and in some cases, people must pay huge sums for documents and services, the information collected may be incomplete and inaccurate. Furthermore, some painful truths can be unintentionally uncovered. They might discover unpleasant family secrets such as crime, historical injustices, or family tragedies, which could lead to emotional distress. Therefore, some believe such efforts and money should be better spent on personal development and existing family issues.
In my opinion, research on our family background and history is important as it helps to raise our awareness in protecting our roots, health and enhancing our knowledge. However, this should be done in a proper way to avoid any unexpected negative consequences such as wasting resources and emotional harm.
In conclusion, although there are arguments both for and against researching family history, I believe it is beneficial for those who do it thoughtfully and with the right purpose.
