Effects of overpopulation in big cities

Overpopulation has several negative impacts on big cities’ life. The first effect of overpopulation is environmental degradation. Due to overpopulation, there are a lot of vehicles on the roads resulting in immense traffic. Exhaust fumes from these vehicles like carbon dioxide are directly released into the atmosphere, which causes air pollution. Moreover, many forests and lands are destroyed to meet the demand for human settlements. As a result, many species have lost their habitat and been on the verge of extinction. For instance, the Florida panther once ranged throughout the southeastern United States now is listed as one of the endangered species because of habitat destruction and fragmentation through urban sprawl. A rise in unemployment is the second consequence of overpopulated cities. As the number of people looking for jobs is increasing, it is more difficult to distribute jobs for all these huge numbers of workers. Consequently, the demand for work is greater than the available occupations, leading to an increased number of unemployed individuals. Additionally, the unemployed still need to feed their families; consequently, they have no choice but to commit crimes such as theft, which is a contributor to elevating the crime rate in megacities. In conclusion, since overpopulation in megalopolises causes both environmental downfall and a higher unemployment rate, people should think about appropriate solutions and take steps to solve this problem as soon as possible.
