The SAT

The SAT

The SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, is a standardized way for American colleges and universities to assess applicants. All high school students must take the SAT and receive a score, which they must release on their application to college. In the US, there are many differences in the public education that children receive. Funds for education in the U.S., are distributed by local income taxes. If people in an area are wealthy, then there is more money collected from taxes and available to give to schools. Wealthier schools can afford better technology and other education tools, thus their students will probably learn more. Colleges need a way to measure all potential students equally. This need has resulted in the SAT. The test has two parts, verbal and math. The verbal section tests the student's vocabulary, reading skill and language ability. The math section assesses various mathematics skills. Students who take this test know how important it is and tend to get very nervous. However, this one test score doesn't entirely determine whether or not someone will get into college. Admissions people at colleges also look at course grades, extracurricular activities and the personal essay to decide whether or not an applicant would be suitable.
